Introduction
In 2004, IMO adopted an international convention for the control and management of ships' ballast water and sediments, to prevent the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens through ships' ballast water and sediments. According to the IMO’s report, approximately 30 - 50 GT of ballast water is transferred by ocean-going ships.

As of 2016, 51 countries (34.87% of the world's merchant shipping tonnage) had endorsed the convention. It is anticipated that the international convention will enter into force in 2016 and all ocean-going ships will be installed an on-board ballast water treatment system within 7 years after the effective date.

To assist customers, ISS Machinery Services has partnered with JFE Engineering Corporation, who manufactures a state-of-the-art ballast water system which filters ballast water and eliminates harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens through chemical treatment. ISS Machinery Service has partnered with Seohyun E&C(MTS) for service and technical support in Korea.
